Handok
launches Korea’s first hypertonic nasal spray Fess

Handok (CEO Youngjin Kim) launched Korea’s
first hypertonic nasal spray, Fess nasal spray (active ingredient: sodium
chloride). ‘Fess’ is Australia’s number one nasal spray brand and the new Fess
Natural Nasal Spray is a spray type general pharmaceutical.

Like that of natural seawater, Fess Nasal
Spray effects the mucus membrane with 3% concentrated osmotic pressure to
relieve stuffy noses. Adults to children over 3 years of age can use the
product daily without any side effects. Additionally, Fess is not an angiotonic
drug but a topical external use product that can be used by patients with high
blood pressure.

Furthermore, Fess Natural Nasal Spray uses
the ‘BoV’ (Bag on Valve) container allowing the safe usage from start to finish
and convenient spraying from any angle. The product uses aseptic packaging and
can be used for prolonged periods of times, 30 months from the production date.
The Fess Natural Nasal Spray comes in 50g bottles and can be sprayed 105 times
or two months when used twice daily for one second each.

Miyeon Kim, the head of Handok’ OTC
department, stated, “1 out of 10 of the Korean population suffer from allergic
rhinitis and these numbers are on the rise due to pollutants such as micro
dust,” adding, “Even more people suffer from allergic rhinitis during the
in-between seasons due to temperature changes, and we hope people can alleviate
their frustration from stuffy noses with the effective Fess Nasal Spray, which
can be used anywhere anytime as it has low side-effects.”

Hypertonic means that the sodium
concentration is higher than the body’s sodium concentration of 0.9%. When
hypertonic solutions are sprayed into the nasal cavity, it causes an osmotic
effect. The osmotic effect is when two liquids with differing concentrations
are cut off in half causing the liquid to move to the side with higher
concentration. Hypertonic products use the osmotic effect to move liquid from
the mucus membrane and reduce nasal edemas and relieve stuffy noses caused by
allergic rhinitis. According to a research study, hypertonic products showed a
14% higher effectiveness on relieving nasal symptoms when compared to
nonpharmacological saline solutions. Additionally, hypertonic products showed
fewer irregularities compared to pharmacological products while having similar
relief effects on symptoms such as stuffy noses, runny noses, sneezing, and eye
irritation.
